PW800: Powering long-haul business jets

Part of Pratt & Whitney’s innovative PurePower® family, the PW800 demonstrates significantly improved fuel efficiency, emission levels, and operating costs. Designed to power long-haul business jets, regional aircraft, and narrowbodies, these engines are characterized by their advanced materials, design methods, and aerodynamics. Among the key components are an efficient fan, a compressor, a turbine, and the low-emission TALON™ combustor, which together ensure a marked reduction in fuel consumption and minimal environmental impact. The PW800 also harnesses the core technology of the Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engine family.

MTU’s involvement in the PW800

With its expertise in high-pressure compressors and low-pressure turbines, MTU is instrumental in the success of the PW800.

Facts

  • EIS: 2018
  • The PW800 is a two-shaft turbofan engine with a thrust category of 10,000–20,000 lbf
  • Double-digit percentage improvements in fuel consumption, environmental emissions, engine noise and operating costs
  • Advanced materials and design technologies and improved aerodynamics
  • Low-emissions TALONTM combustor: Low levels of unburned hydrocarbons and smoke
  • Large access panels in the engine bypass ducts allow mechanics to quickly and efficiently access the engine core
  • State-of-the-art cooling of the high-pressure turbine with active tip clearance control
  • High-pressure compressor: High-stiffness design; cantilevered stages
