V2500 engines reach 300 million flight hour milestone
| MTU Aero Engines has a 16 percent program share in the engine program
| Nearly every MTU facility worldwide played a part in this success
Munich, 9th April, 2025 | In a testament to the engine’s reliability and performance, the V2500 engine program from IAE International Aero Engines AG has now surpassed 300 million in-service flight hours. This successful program will continue to be an important pillar of MTU’s portfolio in the coming years and well over 5,000 additional shop visits are expected globally up to 2040.
MTU Aero Engines is a risk and revenue sharing partner for the V2500 engine with a 16 percent program share. The aero engine specialist is responsible for the entire low-pressure turbine as well as for numerous accessories. Furthermore, the company carries out MRO services both on behalf of the OEM network as well as for MTU’s independent customers.
“Nearly every MTU facility worldwide has played a part in the huge success of this program – from its development and production to reliable maintenance support,” says Michael Schreyögg, Chief Program Officer, MTU Aero Engines. “It is one of our most important programs and remains a durable, reliable and highly-popular engine choice for operators and owners globally.” In fact, around every ten seconds, a V2500 takes off somewhere around the world.
Powering approximately 2,800 aircraft and serving more than 150 operators, the V2500 engine operates passenger, cargo, and military missions around the world. The engine currently powers the Airbus A320ceo family, including A321F passenger-to-cargo conversions, as well as the Embraer C-390 Millennium multi-mission military transport aircraft.
“The V2500 is a mainstay of the industry, and this latest milestone of 300 million flight hours is evidence of the engine’s legacy of reliability and performance,” said Kelly Horan, president, IAE. “With an average age of 15 years, the V2500 engine is in the prime of its life – and we continue to offer customized solutions to meet our customers’ needs.”
IAE is a multinational consortium comprised of Pratt & Whitney, Pratt & Whitney Aero Engines International GmbH, Japanese Aero Engines Corporation and MTU Aero Engines AG. IAE celebrated 40 years of collaboration and innovation in 2023, and successfully tested the V2500 on 100% Synthetic Aviation Fuel (SAF) at MTU Maintenance Hannover in 2024.
