MTU @ ILA Berlin 2024

“90 years and beyond – Passion for engines”: In its anniversary year, too, MTU Aero Engines will be attending ILA Berlin from June 5 to 9 to show off what has made it world-famous for decades – innovative commercial and military engine technologies for today, tomorrow, and beyond.

Zero emission is the major goal of commercial aviation as well as the vision of MTU. The experts have formulated future-oriented responses to this goal, and they are working on further developments also in the evolution of the aircraft gas turbine, based on the geared turbofan and revolutionary engine concepts like the Water-Enhanced Turbofan (WET) and Flying Fuel Cell™ (FFC). Highlights of the MTU booth will include the interactive trade show exhibit, which uses a stylized turbofan to explain the compressor and turbine technologies in detail, and the WET and FFC models.

As always, MTU’s military area is also strongly represented at the trade show booth. There will be an EJ200 – combined with augmented reality applications – along with the TP400-D6 for the A400M military transporter and the MTR390 for the Tiger helicopter. Here, too, the focus is on the future – presenting and explaining concepts around innovative individual technologies for the New Generation Fighter Engine (NGFE), the engine for the new European fighter jet. They will also present the engine for an European Next Generation Helicopter.

Last but not least, there are MTU’s innovative repair technologies and custom-tailored maintenance solutions, which will be presented in the form of an interactive holo-touch exhibit. Experts from MTU Maintenance will be on hand to talk with the visitors.

The MTU engine experts can be found at several different locations in the ILA-ExpoCenter Airport: at the company’s 300-m2 booth in Hall 2, No 310; in the MTU Chalet No 18, Row East; in the FCAS Chalet No 10-11, Row West; and at the Military Support Center in Hall 3. MTU will also be represented in the Future Lab from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) in Hall 2, No 220 / 230.

  • New momentum for the EJ200 engine

    When it comes to engines, what’s better than plenty of power? Normally, the answer is even more power. But in the case of the engine for the Eurofighter, this notion appears to be superfluous. To this day, even the most discerning pilots say the EJ200 leaves nothing to be desired. Its entry into service in 2003 marked the beginning of a new era in fighter jet engine construction. This was the first time that four European partners joined forces to develop the engine for the new fighter that remains state-of-the-art today.

  • The Virtual Engine

    A virtual engine is a virtual version of a physical engine. It comprises the “as-designed twin,” the “as-built twin,” the “as-used twin,” and the digital thread. In the future, MTU wants to use digital twins to virtually map an engine’s entire lifecycle—from development to flight operations. This is a completely transparent, data-driven process that is unique to each engine type.

Tornado: 50 years of success

In August 1974, the Panavia Tornado made its maiden flight. To mark the occasion, the German and Italian air forces each painted one aircraft in a special livery. Both can be seen at the ILA. The Tornado is powered by the RB199 engine.

The demands on the aircraft and the engine were immense at the time: takeoffs from the shortest possible runways, a speed of Mach 2.2 and the transportation of a heavy payload with the lowest possible fuel consumption. Plus thrust reversal for landing on short runways. In the video, Markus Becker, Managing Director of Turbo-Union GmbH, explains why the RB199 is still important to MTU today. 

 


MTU and VINATech cooperate to push FFC technology

MTU starts a landmark partnership with VINATech Co. Ltd., a renowned expert in the field of catalyst coated membranes (CCMs) and membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs).The collaboration aims to push the boundaries of fuel cell technology.
