WE SHAPE THE FUTURE OF AVIATION

Working in development at MTU means

already achieving a
60 %
reduction in climate impact through the use of the modern turbofan.
producing engine components with the utmost precision. Down to
1/100 mm
from producing materials to installing them
playing a part in the use of fuel cells from
2050
on short- and medium-haul routes.
making our vision of
0 emissions
in flight a reality.

Our technologies provide the thrust needed to achieve these aims. A strong and innovative partner to the civil and military aviation sectors, we develop key components for engines used in planes and helicopters. To us, development means spurring the evolution of our products and harnessing revolutionary technologies to shape the future of aviation – actively and internationally, on an interdisciplinary basis, with strong performance.

We make the dream of flying a reality – on a climate-neutral and sustainable basis

How does a leading global engine manufacturer define its development work? In everything we do, we keep our eye on the big picture. That’s why we assume responsibility from cradle to grave for our products, too: from developing the technology to the preliminary design, product development and approval, production and purchasing support to fleet service and decommissioning the product.

Our products are already No. 1 in the world.

From engine construction to maintenance, inspection, and testing – as Germany’s leading engine manufacturer, we offer our customers solutions found nowhere else. Top engineers joining us can look forward to challenging tasks at the world-class level around all aspects of design, approval, and maintenance of our products.

We shape the future of aviation

The products that achieve this mission are based on technological development that anticipates what aspects will be important to aviation and society at large in five, ten, or 15 years. These activities focus on more than just economic factors. Instead, we look most particularly to innovative solutions to achieve climate neutrality and emission-free flying.

We work today to answer aviation questions of tomorrow and beyond

To do this, we work on innovative engine concepts for climate-neutral aviation using alternative sources of energy. That means first and foremost our engine concepts for the geared fan (GTF2), the revolutionary WET gas turbine, and the hydrogen-operated Flying Fuel Cell (FFC). All of these ideas share one goal: to make engines even more fuel efficient and environmentally compatible.

A multi-pronged approach to engineering pushes the limits of what’s possible
What makes working for us special? Our products are extremely sophisticated. They require knowledge of a wide range of professional disciplines, such as aerodynamics, structural mechanics, design, and materials science. That makes for exciting and multifaceted tasks, exactly the kind of thing any engineer enjoys, but that’s not all. It also creates opportunities for far-reaching and productive interactions between disciplines – all with the same aim:

Working together to redefine what’s possible
To achieve the impossible, we create an environment that fosters innovation and excellence: interdisciplinary and international teamwork, fostering creativity and commitment, and close cooperation with national and international partners and institutes.

Leading-edge technology requires top talent

Answering tomorrow’s questions today requires top training and in-depth professional knowledge about engines, but that isn’t all. The human factor is especially crucial. Behind each and every one of our high-tech products is a team of people with a passion and fascination for flying. With the courage to embrace change and awareness of what’s important for the future and the continued existence of our world. Our employees are what makes us successful. They are what sets us apart.

Sound like a good fit for you? If so, we need you!

Why do our employees enjoy working at MTU and as part of our development team?

We asked two of them.

Mirjam Wiedemann (materials engineer, rotor and compressor materials), why do you like working at MTU?
At MTU, I can embrace my passion for materials engineering, and no two tasks are the same. Developments are pursued relentlessly, and there is a huge range of personal development opportunities open to me as a future project manager. Right now I’m working on a safety-related material topic as part of an international body with other engine manufacturers.”

Dr. Marcus Schrade (head of rotor dynamics and structural mechanics for seals), why do you like working at MTU?
I’m an engineer through and through. By that I mean that I love huge professional depth and fascinating products. It’s a rare combination, and I found it at MTU. What makes this job perfect is the shared mindset within the team, which is made up of excellent professionals. It’s what makes top-level engineering possible in the first place.”

For a more detailed picture, we asked three colleagues what exactly they do at MTU and what excites them about their work at MTU (Videos in German).

Component team leader

Our colleague Maria joined MTU in 2016. She is currently working as a component team leader for the development of rotor blades for low-pressure turbines in civil aviation. In the video, she explains exactly what her tasks involve.

Development engineer in structural mechanics

Our colleague Saskia studied mathematics and computer science at the TU Munich. She came to MTU through her doctorate. Find out what her responsibilities are and why she likes working at MTU.

CAD method developer

Matthias has been working at MTU for 10 years and during that time, he has already become acquainted with some of our business units. In the video, he reveals the topics and tasks he is currently dealing with in his role as CAD method developer
